On the night before Jesus was crucified he was handed over to Pontius Pilate from the hands of the Jewish religious authorities. Jesus is standing before Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor, and Pilate would ask Jesus the following questions:
What have you done? (John 18:35)
So you are a king? (John 18:37)
What is truth? (John 18:38)
Where are you from? (John 19:9)
What does all this mean for me? (John 20:30-31)
Each of these five questions we too must ask of Jesus.
The first question: What have you done for us and why is a powerful question that all of us need to ask and receive an answer?
The second question: What does it mean for us that Jesus is a king? Who and what is he king over? Does this have any real significance for our lives today?
The third question: Is there only one truth for all people and the entire universe, or is there no truth that is for all people and everyone is free to believe whatever they want?
The fourth question: Where is Jesus from? Is he just a man or is he truly God in flesh and blood come to earth to redeem and save sinful men and women?
The final question: Is Jesus only a nice story that enables us to celebrate Christmas and Easter, or is Jesus someone we must personally confront in our daily lives?
During our midweek Lenten journey this year we will ask Jesus each of these questions that Pontius Pilate asked of him. These questions need to be asked by all Christians as they follow Jesus with their daily lives.
